Flange Facing Machine Restores Valve Seal Faces to Perfection
In the industrial world, especially within the power, chemical, and oil sectors, the quality of valve seals is critical. Even small imperfections in the sealing face can lead to performance issues, downtime, and costly repairs. This case highlights how MT Portable Machine, with its advanced FI60E Flange Facing Machine, successfully helped a customer restore the sealing face of a valve, ensuring it met the required standards.
The Challenge: Valve Sealing Face Repair
Our customer reached out to us just before shipping a valve, discovering significant damage to the valve’s sealing face. The visible dents and scratches on the sealing surface were clearly unacceptable, as they would fail to meet the strict sealing standards required for the valve’s operation. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the customer immediately contacted MT Portable Machine for assistance. After receiving the call, our team swiftly traveled to the customer’s site to assess the situation. Upon inspecting the valve, we found that the flange had only 50mm of axial clearance available for equipment installation. Further inwards, there was a tapered section of the valve, a common design feature in many valve structures, which posed additional challenges. The standard FI60E flange facing machine’s base, which is equipped with eight support legs arranged in staggered upper and lower layers for increased rigidity, was too large for the available space in this instance. The structure of the base inadvertently increased the axial installation dimension, which made it unsuitable for this particular valve.
Solution: Custom Modifications to the FI60E Machine
To overcome this limitation, MT Portable Machine took immediate action. We redesigned the base is to reduce its axial installation footprint, ensuring that it could fit within the tight clearance. The support jaws at the front end of the support legs were also modified to avoid interference with the sealing face that needed to be machined. These modifications were crucial in allowing the FI60E machine to fit and perform the required operation. Once the custom-modified base was installed, the next step was to begin the machining process. In just four hours of installation and adjustments, the team successfully restored the valve’s sealing face to its original specifications. The valve, now with a smooth, damage-free sealing surface, was able to meet the required sealing standards and was ready for shipment on time, much to the customer’s satisfaction.
